How Much Does a Commercial Cost to Produce?
What a commercial
really costs.
A clear breakdown of what goes into a commercial budget, what moves the number, and how to get more from every dollar, from the producers at Global Video Pros.
The short
answer.
By the Global Video Pros production team · Published
- At Global Video Pros, full commercial production starts at $5,000; focused social pieces start at $750 and campaign packages at $2,500.
- The biggest cost drivers are shoot days, crew size, locations, talent and usage rights, and the number of versions you need.
- Production cost and media cost are separate budgets. Airtime and ad placements are not part of a production quote.
- AI and hybrid production can remove sets, travel, and large crews, but some spots are still better shot live.
- The most efficient budgets plan every cutdown and aspect ratio before the shoot, not after it.
What a commercial
budget pays for.
A commercial budget is not one line item. It is the cost of turning an idea into a finished, approved spot that is technically ready to air. Whether the final piece is a 15-second social ad or a 60-second broadcast spot, the work falls into the same four stages.
Creative development is the concept, script, and visual direction: the thinking that decides what the audience should feel and do. Pre-production turns that idea into a plan: storyboards, casting, locations, permits, scheduling, and the crew list. Production is the shoot itself, or for AI work, the generative build of every scene. Post-production covers editing, color grading, sound design and mix, music, graphics, and the mastered files for every platform.Cheaper quotes usually cut one of those stages short, most often pre-production or post. That is where avoidable reshoots and weak final cuts come from, so it is worth asking any production company exactly what each stage includes.
Three starting
points.
Global Video Pros publishes its starting prices so you can plan before the first call. The Starter package ($750) fits a focused social or short-form ad, a single product clip, or a quick-turn edit with a tight scope. The Middle package ($2,500) fits a campaign-grade film or a multi-asset package for several channels. Full commercial production starts at $5,000 and covers broadcast, CTV, and paid-media commercials with full creative, production, and finishing.
Every project is quoted after a short discovery call, and the price in the proposal is the price you pay for the agreed scope. See pricing and packages for starting prices by service.
Eight factors that
change the price.
Two commercials of the same length can cost very different amounts. These are the decisions that move a budget above its starting point, roughly in order of impact:
- Shoot days. Every additional day adds crew, equipment, and location time. Tight scripting and scheduling is the simplest way to control cost.
- Crew size. A compact team suits interviews and product work; a narrative spot with lighting setups, art department, and multiple cameras needs more people.
- Locations and permits. Each move costs time. Public locations may need permits; private ones may charge fees. Studio and virtual sets reduce both.
- Talent and usage rights. Actors, presenters, and voice talent are paid for the shoot and for how long and where the ad runs. National paid media costs more than a regional social run.
- Creative complexity. Stunts, special effects, motion graphics, and heavy compositing all add production or post time.
- AI, live action, or hybrid. AI can remove sets, travel, and crews entirely; hybrids combine a short live shoot with generated environments or b-roll.
- Deliverable count. Each extra length, aspect ratio, language, or version adds editing, mastering, and review.
- Turnaround. A fixed launch date that compresses the schedule can require a larger team working in parallel.
Where AI changes
the budget.
Generative AI is changing commercial budgets most where traditional production is expensive: exotic locations, large sets, period or fantasy environments, and product visuals that would need complex rigs or effects. Removing travel, set builds, and large crews can bring an ambitious concept into a much smaller budget.
AI is not automatically cheaper for every spot. Commercials that depend on a real founder, real customers, a physical product being used, or a recognizable real-world location are usually better shot live, sometimes with AI used for environments, b-roll, or versioning. At GVP, AI commercials start at $5,000 and every AI project is directed, edited, and finished by our senior human creative team.

Five ways to make
it go further.
The cheapest commercial is not always the best value. The best value is the one that does its job and keeps producing usable assets after launch.
- Plan every version up front. List all lengths, aspect ratios, and platforms before the shoot so coverage is captured once.
- Consolidate locations. Fewer company moves means more time shooting and fewer days on the invoice.
- Capture more than the spot. Stills, behind-the-scenes, and extra b-roll from the same day feed social and web content for months.
- Lock the script before production. Changes after the shoot are the most expensive changes there are.
- Share a budget range early. A producer can design the right approach to a number; guessing wastes everyone’s time.
